When people ask me what is my profession I often reply – a software developer. This is quick and easy way to describe myself as a personality, but it does not say anything about what I do exactly. The more correct answer would be – I am a software engineer. Glenn Vanderburg had a great talk on this topic.
When I try to recall what was my first language to code I think it was basic. But then I am not entirely sure. All I remember is that I started coding somewhere in early 90s while still being in high school living in Moscow. At that time I was lucky to have a PC and studying in school that had programming classes. First year of programming class we actually did not use computers at all, but rather were doing logic operations. The second year turned out to be a lot of fun doing Fortran, Assembler and finally C. Since then I used Pascal, C++, Perl, Java, Ruby, Scala, Python, etc.
I’d say my go to language is Java. But recently it matters less and less what language is used as long as it’s a right tool for the job. Same thing with technologies. But hey, you are a developer yourself, so you know it all already.
